BSL is busy – and we have several new projects. One of these new projects is being carried out by an entirely new onsite team. It’s based on Drupal 8, and we aim to complete the project in June.
New projects – new team
We can’t complain at BSL! We’re working on a number of new projects and several new colleagues have joined us. Two of these new colleagues are working on site as part of a new Scrum team. Our task – the delivery of a new front-end for two existing products from a long-standing client. We are building the new site using a design produced by Spankracht. They’ve been working on the user interface for the last few months. It’s a fully responsive design, and they are delivering HTML/CSS and JavaScript sources for us to use during the development. Our challenge is to use these sources within a Drupal 8 framework. The client is hoping to have the site up and running in about 6 weeks. BSL is in the unique position of knowing the back-end API and database better than anyone. And we have the Drupal expertise to create the front-end.
Talented developers
For this project our back-end developers are updating the Oracle database API, adding new web services. We are also creating custom Drupal modules that communicate with the web services. These are based on older Drupal 7 sources, but Drupal 8 demands a more or less complete rewrite.
Our front-end developers are responsible for integrating the Spankracht HTML/CSS and JavaScript. Not always easy, as we have to recreate their designs within Drupal. And we are also using Drupal to create and manage static pages that can be updated easily by the client. The client expects to see a Drupal 8 website that perfectly recreates the Spankracht design. So there are challenges even for our experienced developers.
Architecture and design
Drupal 8 and Oracle database and custom web services are at the heart of the project. Our developers have extensive experience of all these technologies. We’ve also been asked to integrate a third party authentication system. So that users are verified by an external service before they can access the contents of the client website. This service ensures that users only see the content to which their contract entitles them.
Agile, and swift – the benefits of Scrum
The project is carried out as a series of two-week Sprints. Much of the work will be carried out on site, so we can work together with the end-users. The Scrum Master and Product owner will work with BSL to define the scope of each Sprint, and to refine the user stories. And our project leader will be on hand to keep the project on track. It’s the combined knowledge of BSL and the client that makes it possible to deliver such a complex system so quickly.
