Working at BSL can be fun – as the name suggests! And if any proof were needed, the BSL team recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of Peter Verbaan joining the Bright Side. He’s one of our senior software developers, and he’s joined several colleagues who have now reached this 10 year milestone. No mean achievement in the fast changing world of IT. Is it the fun of working here, the lunches, or the chances he’s had to develop his skills working at BSL… now’s your chance to find out!
Peter Verbaan – Senior Software Developer
Peter first joined our team back in 2006, starting work as a junior software developer. Over the years he’s worked on a wide variety of projects, developing into a senior Java engineer who’s highly respected by his colleagues, as well as clients such as PWC, BNL and NBD Biblion. When asked to describe his 10 years at BSL, he replied “I’ve worked on one interesting project after another – the years just seem to have flown by!
A lot of experience over the years…and perhaps just a few grey hairs…
Working for the Bright Side
But Peter isn’t the only employee who’s worked so long at BSL. Another of our senior developers celebrated his 20 year anniversary last year, and our office assistant reaches her 10 year milestone in 2017. Conclusion: working at BSL is fun! We’re not called the Bright Side of Life for nothing!
Peter’s anniversary celebrations
And we naturally couldn’t let such an occasion pass unnoticed, without raising a glass – or two. We at BSL don’t need an excuse to party…
On 10th May, the morning started with coffee and Limburgse vlaai (a calorie-rich speciality from the southern Limburg region of Holland where Peter grew up). Using images from BSL’s photo archive over the last decade, director Martyn Simpson gave a short heartfelt presentation, saying: ‘Peter is a valued colleague – reliable, hard-working, with great technical skills. It’s been a pleasure working with Peter over the years, someone respected by many of our clients.’
At the start of the afternoon, we left in true convoy-style for restaurant Slangevegt. After enjoying a delicious lunch on the sunny terrace overlooking the river Vecht , we boarded a ‘sloep’ moored alongside (an open wooden boat characteristic of Dutch waterways). A relaxed 2 hours on the river followed, passing the beautiful houses/castles that give this stretch of water its charm. Along the way – with snacks and yet more drinks in hand – the captain told us about the events of 1672, the disaster year, when the area was occupied by the French. And with the sun setting over the Vecht, the BSL team finally headed homewards…
