NBD Biblion – a well-known publisher and information provider specializing in the library- and education branch – has asked BSL to add an additional feature to the AIDA online order system we developed. A good move, as this new Express Titles option is already proving to be a big hit with libraries!
NBD Biblion leads the way
NBD Biblion is a leader in the field of media management, providing clients with literary information via a range of online databases and services. As part of their ongoing program of innovation, NBD Biblion asked BSL to develop a new Express titles feature for their AIDA media order system. Using this new customization, libraries can have the very latest titles on their bookshelves within just a few days of publication.
Express titles
Every week, NBD Biblion provides libraries and clients in the education branch with a carefully selected overview of up to 50 promotional titles, including recently published books, long-awaited titles, the latest works by well-known authors, and other titles that NBD Biblion wishes to promote. These titles are frequently linked to active campaigns, or to national/international events, so it’s important that these titles can be ordered – and delivered – as quickly as possible.
AIDA clients must be able to order these so-called Express titles with a minimum of effort. At the same time they also need to be able to select how the books should be bound. As many of the end-users represent more than one library, an interface had to be designed to make it easy to change the binding style per title, and even per library.
Our solution for AIDA
The AIDA online order system developed by BSL uses a Drupal front-end, designed to match the corporate house-style of NBD Biblion. The choice of Drupal means that we can hand over the web application on completion, so that NBD Biblion designers and developers can make their own changes in the future. Whilst Drupal-based solutions usually use content stored in a MySQL database, AIDA uses data contained in an Oracle database – part of an in-house production system. This is accessed via an API provided by NBD Biblion. BSL uses this API to extract and display the Express titles, and to submit new orders for books.
Our designers have updated the AIDA front-end, introducing the Express titles list. The result – a much improved user interface. When placing orders, users can now quickly and easily select how many copies they wish to order per title, and specify the binding method used for each title and library combination. Even complex combinations of products can be ordered with just a few clicks.
Books ordered using the new interface are printed, bound and delivered within 2 or 3 days – a great new service, highly valued by NBD Biblion clients.
Great success
One of NBD Biblion’s aims in introducing this innovative feature was to stimulate sales of the Express titles. Since the new option first became available in AIDA, sales figures show that libraries have been ordering Express titles in large numbers – a clear indication that all the objectives have been met. This latest innovation is without doubt a great success!
