NBD Biblion is a well-known publisher and information provider specialising in the library- and education branch. BSL has recently been working on improving the metadata that NBD Biblion provides with every title.
NBD Biblion advice
Each week, NBD Biblion produces a wide selection of ‘purchasing advice’ for libraries, institutes, and other parties interested in buying books and others types of media. This advice is used by hundreds of libraries, institutions and commercial subscribers in order to guide their purchases. The same information also assists consumers when selecting titles on popular websites, such as BOL.com.
Metadata improvements
Information distributed by NBD Biblion already included the authors for each title, but it’s now possible to include the specific role and names of other contributors as well (e.g. illustrators, translator). As a result, the quality and quantity of the metadata provided has been greatly enhanced.
To include this additional information in the purchasing advice, we’ve developed and delivered a modification to NBD Biblion’s Media Information Production System (MIPS). At the heart of MIPS we make use of an Oracle database, that combines both traditional structured data, and extensive XML content. Developed by BSL, NBD Biblion uses MIPS to handle the daily input and management of media information and to export the metadata.
