BSL places great store on having a team with a wide range of expertise. Which is why we ‘re able to develop custom software tailored to meet the specific needs of our customers!
Front-end Developer at BSL: Roderick Gadellaa
Roderick joined BSL as Front-end Developer in May of this year. A talented addition to our team, with a passion for the Web. Someone who sings around the office, often adding Dutch lyrics to English numbers. As Front-end Developer at BSL, Roderick creates user interfaces for our applications, working on both technical aspects and the design. In his own words, he puts the icing on the cake!
Career
In 2006, Roderick began a course in ‘Design for Virtual Theater and Games’ at the HKU University of Arts Utrecht. Nowadays known as Interactive Performance Design. A subject that brings together all his hobbies, namely drawing and developing web sites / apps. Roderick is driven by his approach that a web site is not simply a collection of related pages. A good design means that it should tell a ‘story’ too, and of course be user-friendly. Much of his course work was in the field of interaction, including animation, games, and interactive art installation. Once graduated, he began work as a freelancer, mainly developing interactive art installations such as Oantinken.
A new step forwards
Although he’d worked on interesting and art-related projects, Roderick decided to stop freelancing and join BSL as a Front-end Developer. The main reason being that when you work for yourself, you work in isolation. You focus on what you’re good at doing, but with less stimulus to develop further. In contrast, the BSL engineers learn from each other by working closely together, exchanging know-how and ideas. Roderick also likes the fact that he can work on clearly-defined projects, instead of in the less structured art world. What’s more, he sees it as a challenge to work with technology in a different way. And to apply his interaction experience to different types of users.
Projects
Since joining BSL, Roderick has already worked on several interesting projects. He helped redesign BoekWijzer for example, our popular literary app. BoekWijzer is the only mobile app that gives full access to the Literatuurplein database of literary information. A national library web site devoted to Dutch literature, with a wealth of information on more than 1 million books, biographies of some 750,000 authors, interviews, reviews and much more besides. As Front-end Developer at BSL, Roderick was responsible for redesigning and developing the app. He gave the application a new look-and-feel, and added many new functions.
Roderick has also been involved with the new Pulse update. Pulse is a real-time news service developed by BSL for a large international organization. Pulse is used worldwide, and is a great success, winning two international prizes. Thanks to Roderick, Pulse now uses an end-to-end Single Sign On (SSO). With SSO, users only need to sign in once to get automatic access to multiple applications and resources in the company network. Roderick has worked too on a NBD Biblion project, updating their Literom and Uitrekselbank website products. Using feedback from the test phase, he was able to finely-tune the software to meet our customer’s needs.
