NBD Biblion, a leader in media management, is a publisher and information provider specializing in the library and education branch. LiteRom is just one of NBD Biblion’s online products making use of the custom content management system developed and supported by BSL: MoM (More about Media). Following NBD Biblion’s decision to introduce a standard Drupal-based solution, our knowledge of MoM and experience with Drupal meant that BSL was the obvious choice to create a Drupal-based LiteRom website.
NBD Biblion Drupal-based Literom
LiteRom is a front-end web application that gives users access to book reviews and articles about authors that are published in Dutch and Belgian daily- and weekly newspapers. It links to NBD Biblion’s MoM content management system, which contains detailed information about thousands of books, authors, and other media titles such as DVDs.
Developed by a third party, earlier versions of the LiteRom software makes use of a custom .NET solution linked directly to MoM. Slow, unreliable and insecure (due to the direct link to the MoM database), it was time for renewal. As NBD Biblion has a strategy of implementing more and more of their front-end web applications using the Drupal open source CMS, this is naturally the platform they chose for the new Literom development. Not only our long-term relationship with NBD Biblion, but our in-house Drupal expertise guaranteed that BSL was ideally placed to propose a solution.
Drupal 7 and web-services
The new site will use Drupal 7 as the front-end, enabling NBD to maintain the contents and interface. However, the project will also include the development of RESTful web services, delivering content from the MoM database to the Drupal environment via JSON.
Development of software incorporating the corporate web site’s Drupal theme as the basis for Literom is well underway, with a release planned before the end of the year. Not only will the new Drupal-based LiteRom be easier to manage, but the new RESTful web services will ensure correct content can be obtained from the database without requiring any knowledge of the data model itself. And by introducing the web services, database security will be improved too. Last but not least, optimization of database queries will mean better and more stable performance.
