NBD Biblion is a well-known publisher and information provider specialising in the library- and education branch. NBD Biblion has recently released an update to their ‘Uittrekselbank’ (Abstracts) service: a web service that allows its users to find abstracts from more than 2,700 popular book titles, as well as around 350 author profiles.
NBD Biblion Abstracts service – the ‘Uittrekselbank’
The abstracts include a summary, and a readers’ guide, providing information about the themes, structure, characters and style that are present in each of the titles. They frequently include an overview of comments made by reviewers, background information, and suggestions for topics that can be used during a book reading or discussion. The author portraits include biographical details, references to other works by the same author (along with a complete bibliography) and various links to publishers and web sites.
The Uittrekselbank is a popular source of information within libraries, and is probably one of the most popular resources provided within school media centres (Mediatheeks). The latest version of the service has been updated with a new modern layout, and now includes a range of additional functions including: most viewed titles and title, author and theme indexes.
Oracle API
More importantly for BSL – and NBD Biblion – this is the first internal web site development created by NBD Biblion web developers using the Universal Oracle API developed by BSL. This provides fast, secure and efficient access to content stored in the MoM (More over Media) Oracle database. This was also developed by our engineers.
The API not only supports the search, retrieval and back-office functionality required for NBD Biblion’s abstracts service, but will also support the rapid development of many future products within the NBD organization. It provides access to a wide range of content types, making development of new services far more straightforward than in the past.
