As a well-known publisher and information provider specializing in the library- and education branch, NBD Biblion is a leader in the field of media management. Developed by BSL, their MIPS production system is used to provide NBD Biblion clients with weekly up-to-date information about new titles. Our engineers are currently working on further improvements to MIPS that make it possible to manage even more metadata, so safeguarding against the loss of valuable source information following the forthcoming move to the MARC 21 data format recently announced by OCLC.
NBD Biblion – MIPS
NBD Biblion receives hundreds of new titles (books, sheet music and other media) every month. Developed by BSL, MIPS (Media Information Production System) was designed to manage metadata for these titles – as well as handle and monitor the (financial) administration and planning for reviewers. Much of the title metadata originates from the GGC (the acronym for Shared Automated Cataloging System for Dutch LIbraries), a service provided by OCLC. MIPS provides a total solution, distributing a wide range of customised weekly reports, containing the very latest (media) title information, reviews and descriptions to NBD Biblion clients.
Marc 21 migration
The OCLC will shortly be migrating from ‘PICA’ as the exchange format to MARC 21. As MARC 21 contains only a subset of attributes available in PICA, such a move means that existing metadata may be lost. BSL is therefore working on an MIPS update that will allow NBD Biblion to maintain more attributes describing books, sheet music, films, games and other media within the MIPS production system. At the same time, our engineers are also making a number of improvements to the back- and front-end, for example enhancing the metadata validation and improving the web interface. The result of all these changes will provide NBD users with even more flexibility in their daily work, both now and in future.
If you may also be affected by the transition from PICA to MARC 21 announced by OCLC, please don’t hesitate to contact BSL. We have the expertise and experience in house to ensure that your valuable metadata won’t be lost or degraded!
