As developer of the app for lovers of Dutch literature BoekWijzer BSL is always interested in any news from the literary world. We’ve recently come across a website that helps secondary school pupils in the Netherlands (as well as teachers, parents, and libraries) choose books for their school reading list: www.lezenvoordelijst.nl. With the academic year now beginning, this seemed like a good time to tell our readers more about it!
Inspire young readers – ‘Lezen voor de lijst‘
Any initiative that will inspire young readers is always welcome. The ‘Lezen voor de lijst’ site (Dutch language) provides a whole range of book suggestions for children’s reading projects (Dutch, German and Friesian language), divided into six levels of reading ability in the age categories 12 -15 years, and 15 – 19 years. A variety of information is given about each book, including a brief description of the story, information about the author, reading notes, and points for discussion.
Pupils can easily search for books by genre and/or subject, or by reading level within the two age categories. There’s a Top 5 of book tips too, and they can see the most popular books in a particular period, age category or language.
Free account – add your own bookshelves
And if they make a free account, they can put together their own bookshelves, compile a reading list, and make notes about the books they’ve read. Selected books can then be ordered from libraries via the site, or (of course) via BoekWijzer.
In other words, it’s never been easier – or more fun – for school kids to put together their own reading list!
