BSL designs and develops Business Intelligence solutions for multinational companies. Our systems integrate content from thousands of worldwide publications and websites, delivering targeted news alerts and briefings to business users based on themes defined by users and information specialists. We’ve been developing and supporting these systems for over 20 years. Recently, we introduced AI technologies to enhance the quality of our daily business briefings. Our blog highlights some of the benefits we’ve seen while implementing this technology.
Thousands of source articles each day
Our software imports content from hundreds of publications, newsfeeds, and websites from all over the world. We import, analyse and classify thousands of new articles each day. The quality of the hundreds of targeted news alerts we distribute depends on our ability to read, integrate, and extract meaning from diverse publications. As you’d expect, time is of the essence. To ensure that we provide timely alerts, we need to process new content in near real-time.
We’ve recently incorporated Microsoft’s AI technology, including Cognitive Search AI and Azure AI, into our technology stack. This change has brought our news alerts’ quality and performance metrics to an even higher level.
How are we using AI within our software?
We add content in many languages when we integrate content from publishers worldwide. Those who use online translation tools like DeepL and Google Translate may have noticed that the quality of translations has significantly improved over the past year, thanks to AI. The impact of AI on translation has, in fact, been remarkable.
- Enhanced Accuracy: AI-driven translation models, such as neural machine translation (NMT), have substantially improved translation accuracy. They understand context, idiomatic expressions, and nuances, reducing the risk of mistranslations. This improvement has profound implications for our software. We can now – if necessary – reliably translate and summarise sets of articles in a single language, even if the sources are in many different languages.
- Faster Translations: AI-driven translation tools provide almost instantaneous translations, facilitating near real-time conversions and processing. This performance enhances efficiency and productivity, enabling faster decision-making and reducing language barriers. Within our software, we can present articles – whatever their source – in the consumer’s native language.
- Customisation and Personalisation: AI-powered translation solutions offer customisation options, allowing users to fine-tune translations for specific industries, jargon, or preferences. This personalisation enhances the relevance and quality of translations, making them more tailored to individual or business needs.
Overall, AI-driven language translation has transformed our software, bridging linguistic divides and fostering collaboration on a scale never before possible.
Other AI applications
While helping us to present content in the language of the consumer is a crucial application of AI, we’re also leveraging AI in two other ways:
- Summarisation: We no longer rely on content suppliers to deliver headlines, summaries and keywords to classify content. Instead, we use AI to create personalised summaries and, in turn, use these to categorise the content. Using AI, we can generate summaries for any number of articles in a mailing, delivering key phrases and summarising them accurately. Users can easily customise the length and level of detail they want for each summary. Additionally, we can use AI to translate articles into an intermediate language, create summaries in that language, and then translate the results into the user’s native language. Fast, transparent, and readily customised.
- Sentiment analysis: AI plays a crucial role in sentiment analysis by using natural language processing techniques to automatically analyse and understand the emotional tone in articles. This “sentiment analysis” helps our business users to gauge public opinion, customer feedback, and market trends, enabling data-driven decision-making, brand monitoring, and targeted engagement. Adding this to our daily briefing means that users can track changes in sentiment, helping them to follow changes in public opinion about companies and industries over time.
Built for multinational use
Our software provides real-time briefings across various business sectors. While AI and other technologies are crucial to our software, many different aspects are involved in managing large content repositories. We must ensure that we handle all content in compliance with the agreements governing the use of content. Sometimes, this means we must support access to the sources through paid gateways to register the use of content. There may also be restrictions on who has access, where the content can be viewed, what content can be stored, for how long, and what can be processed using AI.
Our software manages all these terms of use, as well as authors’ rights. These features are essential if our clients are to comply with their licensing agreements with providers such as Factiva or Lexis Nexis.
