A day at BSL

BSL recruits new personnel with a video: A day at BSL!

The jobs market is picking up again in 2017, a change that hasn’t gone unnoticed at BSL. We’ve spotted a number of other trends that directly impact recruitment within companies. One of these is the use  of video resumés, replacing traditional CV’s. As we have some open job vacancies – and think this is an original way of attracting new colleagues – we decided to make our own video. Our very own: A day at BSL!

It’s become quite commonplace for job applicants to produce their own video pitch. But it’s not only those looking for work that need to use all available tools to best profile themselves on the employment market. Companies without well-known names such as Heineken and Coca Cola need to find ways to stand out from the crowd too. So after a few brainstorm sessions, we hit on the idea of making a short video about what it’s like working for the Bright Side of Life. In other words, what does a typical day within a specialist and innovative software development company look like?

A day at BSL

We start each workday with a ‘standup’. Our chance for colleagues to tell one another what they’re working on. What’s more, it’s the ideal moment to exchange ideas and know-how. And to make everyone feel involved. After all, one of the main strengths of BSL is our size. We work in small teams, where each of us knows exactly what our colleagues are working on. You not only have the opportunity to learn from others at BSL, you have the freedom to develop further too.

At the end of the morning we get together for a buffet-style lunch. Just think of those extra minutes you can spend snoozing – no need to make sandwiches! We talk about a whole range of topics during our lunch break, ranging from film, music, tv, politics, and of course sport. And as we have several film- and music lovers (and musicians) in our midst, you’re guaranteed to have a list of ‘must see’ movies or a new Spotify playlist by the end of the week.

It’s back to work after lunch. Some of us focus on developing great software for our customers. Others meet with clients at our modern office in Breukelen or on-site. Marketing creates new campaigns, whilst our secretariaat takes care of all the administration. At the end of the week, we’re ready to enjoy a beer together – or a glass of cola for the teetotallers. A good way to start the weekend, making sure we return on Monday fully refreshed for a new week at BSL! And no matter how you choose to travel, BSL is easy to reach. There’s plenty of parking space next to our office, and for lovers of public transport, the train station is only 400 m away.

Working with Videobird

We made the video together with Videobird, a company that also produced the promotional video for our DilemmaMatch app. And we’re really happy with ‘A day in the life’ too. It shows that work can be fun!  After all, we’re not called the Bright Side of Life for nothing…..

Progressive Web Apps in EU undermined by Apple?

Progressive Web Apps in EU undermined by Apple?

If you aren’t familiar with mobile app development, you may not know that Apple has recently thrown a rather large spanner into the iOS ecosystem. Since the early betas of iOS 17.4 were made available, developers noted that so-called “Progressive Web Apps” (PWAs) were no longer functional in the EU. Our blog explains more.

Browser engine wars – Part 2 – The impact of Apple’s iOS monopoly

Browser engine wars – Part 2 – The impact of Apple’s iOS monopoly

The Apple iOS monopoly means that every app on iOS – including browsers from Apple’s competitors – must use WebKit to display web content. While it’s not uncommon for browser developers to use a third-party engine, they can usually control which engine features they use in their browser and – if needed – add custom features.

Browser engine wars – Part 1 – How did we get here?

Browser engine wars – Part 1 – How did we get here?

The Register recently reported that Google is working on an iOS version of Chromium. A few days later, a second article claimed that Mozilla is working on an iOS version of Gecko, Firefox’s browser engine. Both reports suggest that the Apple browser engine on iOS, WebKit, is in danger of losing its monopoly.

Goodbye 2021 and COVID-19 lockdowns – It’s time to look back

So who, in early 2020, thought that we’d still be operating under COVID-19 lockdown measures in January 2022? Luckily, my skill set has given me a better understanding of software development and technology than catering or hospitality. As director of an IT company, I’m happy to say that Bright Side of Life has taken to remote working as a fish to water. Let me tell you about our year.

Drupal 9 replaces Drupal 8. Long live Drupal 7!

Drupal 9 replaces Drupal 8. Long live Drupal 7!

Drupal 9 arrived last year, and Drupal 8 is end-of-life in November 2021. Nothing strange about this. But did you know that Drupal 7’s life has been extended to November 2022? Due to the high number of active users, it will remain in use longer than Drupal 8! Nevertheless, if you’re still using Drupal 7, you’re drinking in the last chance saloon, and it’s time to plan your transition to Drupal 9.
