As a well-known publisher and information provider specializing in the library- and education branch, NBD Biblion is a leader in the field of media management, providing clients with literary information via a range of online databases and services. Innovation is high on their agenda in 2016. With this in mind, BSL has been asked to develop a new ‘More over Media’ web API. This will be used to update two existing NBD web applications (their Literom and Uittrekselbank) both technically and visually. We will also be updating their More over Media web service, adding new features, and improving the interface.
In an earlier project, BSL created a database API to access the wealth of literary content managed via the More over Media CMS (MoM), a CMS that was designed and developed by our engineers. You can learn more about this project here. We are now working on development of a new Universal API in the form of a web service that can be used by both NBD Biblion and external parties to rapidly and safely develop new products. As a ‘proof of concept’ we are updating the BSL-developed LiteRom and the NBD Biblion-developed Citations (Uittrekselbank) web application, making use of the new web service to access MoM content. The web interfaces for both applications are based on Drupal, and both are designed to provide a fully responsive web site.
Our solution for More over Media
BSL’s solution consists of an Oracle API that gives direct access to the MoM content, coupled to a REST web service designed for use by developers. This multi-tier solution improves security, whilst ensuring a better division of functionality (SOA approach). In future, external parties will also be able to access MoM contents by means of the web service, without needing detailed knowledge of the underlying CMS. BSL has offered to provide and maintain a Wiki documenting the functions and services provided via the web service, making it even easier to use.
Improved More over Media interface
In parallel with this development, BSL will make more improvements to the More over Media service. This service, used by a large number of online library catalogs in the Netherlands and Belgium to provide detailed title information, will be linked to NBD Biblion’s central authentication- and authorization system. In addition to the technical updates, the user interface will also be given a more modern look, incorporating a responsive design that will make it much easier to integrate the More over Media content with present-day library and third party web sites. The initial release will include support for both the NBD Biblion housestyle, and the Bibliotheek.nl style.
